16Dec06

This interview is like a show case of how to use open source in business.  Some might say, yeah but that’s Google, they are special.  Well, read the interview, Chris DiBona’s comments and recommendations on open and closed source are relevant for all businesses and can be summarized to: use closed source, if the code is used for your services and those services are your core competence, your competitive advantage.  Otherwise contribute to open source whenever and whereever you can.

Wikipedia estimates that in 2006, Google had serverfarms distributed all over the world consisting of more than 450,000 low-cost commodity computers running a stripped-down version of Linux.
